CHARLES AVERY WALK, born August 18, 1928 at McGee, Missouri to Charles Eddie Walk and Etta (McDaniel) Walk VanMatre and entered his heavenly home on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.
Avery went to Elementary school in the local country school and grew up on a small farm learning how to break horses and mules for work and to ride. He also enjoyed his hunting dogs which he kept on the farm with him until 1990. Avery married Kathryn Joyce (Richmond) Walk on December 1, 1951, his beautiful bride for nearly 61 years. In March 1952, he entered the Army, during the Korean War, and served for two years in Germany. After returning home, Avery & Kathryn lived on the James Stephens Farm as sharecroppers for four years. In 1958, Avery and his brother-in-law, Floyd Barnfield, bought the Ed DeCelis Farm (and later, the Lurker Place) jointly until 1980 before dividing the acreage. Avery & Kathryn raised hogs until 1980 but always had and raised cattle, keeping the fields cut, hay bailed, fences mended, roads bladed and many other duties a farm demands. In 1964, Avery went to work for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, serving at Mingo Refuge until retirement on August 31, 1990.
Avery accepted Christ as his Savior in 1944 and was baptized. He was a member of Bright Prospect Church, then later his moved membership to Richmond Chapel Church where he was ordained as a deacon on March 28, 1970. He taught Sunday School for years as well as served as SS Superintendent and Song Leader for periods of time. In 1996, Avery & Kathryn moved their church membership to Puxico First General Baptist Church, continuing to serve as deacon and SS teacher as needed.
Uncle Avery, to most everyone, was a great storyteller and a prankster. Kids all over the countryside enjoyed spending time with Uncle Avery and Aunt Kathryn, who showed love to all the children and families around. Many nephews and nieces enjoyed eating at their table, learning to work around the farm, mow & haul hay, paint the barns, ride horses, play in the creek, garden & can/preserve foods, cook, clean, have long discussions in or out of the house, go to church, sing and laugh. Uncle Avery was a mentor to many and his legacy is very, very long.
Avery is preceded in death by wife, Kathryn Walk (February 13, 2011) and daughter, Anita Phyllis Walk (March 21, 1953). Also, by his parents along with four brothers: Milford Walk, Wilford Steve Walk, Audrey Walk, Edward Walk and four sisters: Beulah McAllister, Mary Hefner Nichols, Thelma Hinton, Ruby Barnfield.
Visitation will be at Morgan Funeral Home, Advance, MO on Sunday, April 16, 2023 from 5:00 8:00 pm and the Funeral service will be at Puxico First General Baptist Church, Puxico, MO on Monday, April 17, 2023 at 10:00 am. Internment will follow at McGee Cemetery, McGee, MO.
